5 minutes with a Bodywise Pilates instructor

Q&A on Pilates with Fernanda Rosa (Bodywise Pilates instructor)

What do you love the most about Pilates and what inspired you to teach?

I love Pilates because you have to stay aware throughout the session. Focusing on every details and how you hold your body to achieve beautiful posture and a quality workout.

My inspiration for Pilates comes from the results obtained after a few classes, such as posture improvement, strength gained and lessening of body aches. This leads to a healthier lifestyle and a boost in well-being.

What is your favourite Pilates exercise?

I love challenging exercises; those that make you go beyond your limits in balance and strength. My favourite exercise is "rolling like a ball". When well performed, it strengthens the abdominal region, works your balance, and pays off by giving a slight massage in your back at the same time. View an example of 'rolling like a ball' here

You only have 30 minutes, what is your go to healthy lunch or dinner dish?

I usually give preference to a healthy lunch and try to cook at home to balance my meals. But when I eat outside, my choice is a tasty salad or something light. Fruit salad has become a good addition every morning!!! =). However, balance for me also means not balancing all the time. I love enjoying a delicious dinner, accompanied by a sweet dessert and with a fruity wine.

One random fact about you that the Bodywise community wouldn't know?

I love cycling, and my students may have noticed that I love going to the studio by bike. Before coming to New Zealand, I used to mountain bike almost every day with a group on dirt trails surrounded by nature. During that time, I participated in a few competitions and even received a few medals. I have to admit that was a lot of fun. Besides cycling, I like all kinds of sports and everything that works our body and mind.

What would be your one gem of advise for someone looking to get into fitness and Pilates?

Pilates can change your life. It makes you overcome your challenges, improves your strength and flexibility, and correts your posture. You will discover muscles in your body that you didn't know existed. Pilates is also long-term care for your body and mind, to improve well-being and your quality of life. Try it; I'm sure you'll love it just like us =)
